Boating this season? Don’t forget Nina!

When making boating plans this season, packing your gear, making all the safety checks, setting your destination, organising your crew there's one extra to remember to consider this season - Nina. Or more specifically, La Niña. La Nina is a climate driver which is currently affecting Australia's weather conditions and is set to continue through to at least February 2021. Weather has implications for all types of boating and fishing activities so La Nina should be factored into your plans to ensure you fully enjoy your water experiences.

Recreational boaters and fishers make checking the weather a regular part of their routine. It’s for safety as well as enjoyment. But climate drivers such as La Nina have longer term effects and more general changes in overall weather than simply a storm or strong winds in the forecast.

As experienced fishers well know, changes in water temperature can impact the stocks and availability of fish species and dramatic variations in climate can cause significant changes to the patterns of species development, reproduction and migration cycles. All factors to consider when you’re chasing a special fish variety in a specific location.

You may also need to equip your boat with additional safety equipment or new gear. When buying a new boat, we encourage our Jade Boat Loans customers to select and include their safety equipment at the time of purchase so your consultant can include the cost in the boat loan.

La Nina and Your Boating

Australia is impacted on a cyclical basis by a number of climate drivers, especially El Nino and La Nina. El Nino has become relatively well-known in Australia as very much responsible for our extended drought conditions. So what does La Nina hold in store for us? We referred to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) for the facts.

La Nina appeared in the Pacific Ocean from around October 2020 and is expected to have an effect on Australia’s weather and climate through to February 2021. In general, La Nina brings an increase in rainfall across much of the country; south of the tropics it means cooler temperatures during the day; in the north it means overnight temps can be warmer; shifts in temperature extremes can be experienced; an increase in tropical cyclones; an earlier onset to the monsoon season; and changes in water/ocean temperatures.

Why all this happens is due to changes in the equatorial trade winds, ocean surface current changes and the winds blowing conditions from east to west. Ocean temps in the western Pacific warm which results in heavy rainfall for northern Australia. It gets more technical and you can refer to the BOM website for more information.

But the bottom line or lines for fishers and boaters…

  • Expect cooler weather in southern areas of Australia
  • Warmer temps above the tropics
  • Increased rainfall across most of Australia
  • Increase in the number of cyclones
  • Waters in the north likely to be warmer

Adapting for La Nina in your boating and fishing plans may mean a change of timing for an interstate trip and those with yachts will need to take in the greater possibility of cyclones. Those boating in rivers and lakes may need to be more vigilant for debris following rain events.

Selecting Your Boat

Planning a boating holiday or your weekly regular boating and fishing activities to include ‘Nina’ may mean ensuring you have the right boat. A trailer boat is a highly versatile option as it gives you the opportunity to head to wherever they’re biting rather than being limited to the area where your boat is moored.

If the species you’re chasing are more prevalent in a certain geographical location, simply hitch up your trailer boat and head to where they’re biting!

Trailer boats come in an extensive selection of types and sizes, from many manufacturers and across a large price range. Sometimes the smaller the boat doesn’t always mean the smaller the price tag. When you’re browsing boats online, it’s a great idea to keep our boat loans calculator open in another browser to check possible repayments.

Our calculator quickly converts boat price to estimated boat repayments, based on our current cheap boat loan interest rates.
